Furnace replacement in Albuquerque makes sense when the next repair buys less time than it costs, or when the heat exchanger has failed. If neither is true, we will tell you to repair it. Red Wrench Company can write up both options on one free estimate, so you compare real numbers with no pressure to decide on the spot.
Is It Time to Replace Your Furnace, or Just Repair It?
Age alone does not decide it. Weigh these signals together. The U.S. Department of Energy's Energy Saver guide suggests considering replacement when a furnace passes 15 years, or when repairs get frequent as energy bills climb. An older DOE contractor guide adds a useful test: would the repair cost more than half of a replacement?
| What you are seeing | What it means | Where it usually leads |
|---|---|---|
| One failed igniter or sensor on a sound furnace | Normal wear | Repair |
| Cracked heat exchanger | A combustion safety problem | Replace |
| Blower or board failure past 15 years | A big bill on a tired unit | Price both |
| Second or third repair in a season | More failures are likely | Price both |
| Rooms never warm, even after repair | Sizing or ducts may be the issue | Measure before buying |
| Sooty cabinet or rust around the burners | Combustion or venting trouble | Inspect, then decide |
The serial number on the model plate gives the build date, so we can state your furnace's age at the visit. If an old furnace is still safe and runs well, replacing it early is a choice and not an emergency.

What a Swap Disturbs Beyond the Furnace
A new furnace connects to things that were built around the old one. Good quotes deal with these up front.
- The AC coil. The cooling coil usually sits on top of the furnace. A new cabinet may not match it, and an aging AC may be worth pricing at the same time.
- The water heater. When a furnace shares a chimney or flue with a gas water heater, and the new furnace vents through its own plastic pipe, the water heater is left alone in a flue sized for two. That orphaned heater may not draft properly, so the vent needs checking and may need a liner or other change.
- The ducts. Old ducts sized for a different blower may leak or choke a new furnace. In homes built around a swamp cooler, the ducts need the same scrutiny.
- The thermostat. A multi-stage furnace may need different wiring.
- The gas line. Pipe size and pressure need to suit the new input.
We inspect those items at the estimate, so they do not turn up as surprises on install day.

80 or 95 Percent: Which High Efficiency Furnace Pays Here?
AFUE, or Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency, is the share of the fuel that becomes heat in the home. The federal minimum for most gas furnaces is 80% today (DOE). A high efficiency furnace in the 90s condenses its exhaust, vents through plastic pipe and needs a drain for the condensate.
The right choice depends on how much gas you burn, how easily the vent and drain can be routed and what rebates apply. A condensing furnace pays back faster in a colder, higher home than in a mild valley one, and it costs less to install when the furnace already sits near an outside wall. We put both on paper with the vent work included, so the extra cost is visible.
The U.S. Department of Energy has also set a 95% AFUE standard for most new gas furnaces made from December 18, 2028. That rule has been through the courts and a delay has been discussed, so treat the date as subject to change. It does not force anyone to remove a working furnace.

How a Planned Replacement Runs
Replacing before a breakdown gives you the most choices. Waiting until a January failure usually narrows them.
- We inspect the furnace, vent, coil and ducts, and confirm the age.
- We run a Manual J load calculation, because the old unit's size may have been wrong from the start.
- You get a written estimate listing equipment, labor, permit, removal and disposal.
- The mechanical permit comes next; the quote should state who pulls the permit, and ours does.
- We shut off gas and power, swap the furnaces, reconnect ducts, gas, venting and controls, then follow the manufacturer's high-altitude instructions.
- We test full heat cycles, confirm the water heater still drafts properly if it shared the flue, walk you through the system, and the inspection closes out the permit.
Most of the disruption falls on install day, and customers mention respect for the home. Your expected start and duration go on the quote.
What the Replacement Includes
The written estimate names each of these as its own item, so you can hold it against any other quote:
- The new furnace by model, input and AFUE
- Removal and disposal of the old unit
- Vent, gas and coil connections, plus any water heater venting change
- High-altitude setup to the manufacturer's instructions
- The mechanical permit and its inspection
Permit Rules for a Furnace Swap
The state Construction Industries Division (CID) says that on a furnace replacement, a licensed contractor takes out the permit first. Energy rules apply too: 14.7.6 NMAC ties permits to the 2021 IECC from July 30, 2024 on. The issuing office turns on the address, so verify fees with the City of Albuquerque, Bernalillo County or your town.
What Does a Furnace Replacement Cost in Albuquerque?
No reliable published figure exists for a furnace alone here, so get a written local quote. The nearest number is for a whole system: full HVAC replacement in Albuquerque runs $7,536 typical, $3,589 to $11,483 for most projects, about 4% below the national average (RealCostIQ, 2026, a non-government estimate). A furnace-only job can sit well below that.
Furnace replacement cost moves with:
- Input size, AFUE rating and blower type
- Vent changes and any water heater venting work
- Coil or duct changes
- Location and access
- Permit fees and disposal
- Whether the AC is replaced at the same time
We can talk through flexible pricing options with the estimate. Our furnace replacement cost guide goes further into each line.

Rebates, Credits and the Paperwork to Keep
Check rebates before you sign, because amounts change. New Mexico Gas Company furnace rebates have been cited from about $325 to $500, commonly up to $425. Verify the current figure and qualifying models with NMGC.
The federal 25C tax credit has ended. It does not apply to equipment placed in service after December 31, 2025, so any quote that promises it is out of date. Keep your invoice and AHRI documentation, the matched-equipment certificate rebate programs often want.

John's review names the furnace. George's describes a replacement without naming the equipment. We replace furnaces around Albuquerque, including the North Valley, the South Valley and Los Ranchos, where older homes often raise the venting and duct questions above.
“Had a entirely new unit installed new furnace new tubing all the works . Excellent job great communication even loaned me 3 window units to use while my ac was down. And installed a new thermostat for me . Highly recommend . A+++”
“Friendly, dedicated to make sure that we were well taken care of. Provided quality products to replace our old products. Extremely satisfied with performance, products, and over all experience! Great job! Thank you Dominic!”
After the Old Furnace Is Gone
Treat the first weeks as a check. A little odor from burn-off on a first cycle is normal. A smell of gas never is, so leave the house and call New Mexico Gas Company at 1-888-664-2726 or 911 from outside. Change the filter on schedule, because construction dust loads it fast, and book furnace maintenance each fall.
Areas we serve
- South ValleyUnincorporated addresses use Bernalillo County permits, and some need a floodplain determination first.
- North ValleyOutside City limits, County Planning on Silver Ave SW handles mechanical permits for licensed contractors.
- Los Ranchos de AlbuquerqueAsk Village Hall first: building permits start by pre-consultation, with no online submittals listed.
- BernalilloTown staff review first, then CID issues trade permits and inspections for the Town.
- Rio RanchoThe City's homeowner permit leaves out mechanical work, so a contractor handles this swap.
- BelenNew Mexico Gas Company serves the city, so check its furnace rebate before signing.
- Bosque FarmsOver half the homes predate 1980, so older vents get checked before any swap.
- PeraltaManufactured homes are 31% of stock, and those furnaces need a different replacement.
- Los LunasHomes from 2000 on make up 46% of stock, and first furnaces are aging together.
- GallupAbout 6,105 heating degree days make a planned swap near 6,470 feet worthwhile.

Furnace Replacement questions
How long should a furnace last in Albuquerque?
There is no fixed number, and maintenance matters more than the calendar. The Department of Energy suggests considering replacement after 15 years. Plenty of furnaces run longer, and neglected ones can fail sooner, especially with Albuquerque's dust on filters and blowers. We read the build date off the model plate and judge the condition on the visit.
Can a cracked heat exchanger be repaired?
In most cases, replacement is the sensible answer. The heat exchanger separates combustion gases from house air, and it is a major part that takes much of the furnace apart to reach. We compare the cost of a new exchanger on your model, if one is available, against a new furnace in writing.
Should I replace my AC at the same time as the furnace?
Consider it when the AC is near the end of its life. The coil sits on the furnace, so doing both together avoids reworking the same connection twice. If your AC is fairly new and matches, keep it. We can price the furnace alone and the pair together so you can see the difference.
Is a 95 percent furnace worth it at Albuquerque's elevation?
It can be, depending on the home. Condensing furnaces still need the manufacturer's high-altitude setup, and the vent and drain route can add cost. Colder, higher homes burn more gas and recover the difference sooner. We work out both options with your gas use and vent path before you decide.
Is there a federal tax credit for a new furnace in 2026?
No. The 25C credit stopped covering equipment placed in service after December 31, 2025. New Mexico Gas Company rebates may still help, and amounts have varied by source. Confirm the current program with the utility and keep your invoice and AHRI documentation for any claim.
Do you remove and dispose of the old furnace?
Yes, removal and disposal are written into the estimate as their own line so you can see them. If a quote elsewhere leaves that out, ask about it. Any line you do not understand is worth a question before you sign, and we will explain ours in plain English.
