Water heater repair in Albuquerque starts with one question: is the tank still sound? Red Wrench Company checks the heat source, the controls and the tank itself, then tells you whether a repair makes sense or the unit has reached its end. Call (209) 563-1400 and you get the price in writing before we touch it.
What Is Your Water Heater Doing?
Find your symptom, then try only what the last column allows. Anything behind the burner cover or the electrical panel on the tank is a job for a technician.
| Symptom at the tank | Likely cause | Your safe first check |
|---|---|---|
| No hot water at all, gas unit | Pilot, gas control or a safety shutoff | Is the gas valve open? Is the house gas on? |
| No hot water at all, electric unit | Breaker, high-limit switch or a failed element | Check the breaker once. Do not keep resetting it |
| Runs out faster than it used to | Sediment, a failed lower element or a broken dip tube | Note how long a shower lasts |
| Rust-colored hot water | Corroding tank or worn anode rod | Does the cold tap run clear? |
| Rumbling or popping | Sediment boiling on the tank floor | Listen during a heat cycle |
| Water at the base | Fitting, relief valve or the tank itself | Find where the water starts |
| Rotten-egg smell in hot water | Reaction around the anode rod | Run cold and compare |

Why Albuquerque Tanks Wear Out
Our water and altitude shape how a heater ages, and a few local habits add to it.
- Hard water. The Water Authority describes local water as moderately hard to hard, and it publishes results by distribution zone. One 2023 zone report averaged about 8.4 grains per gallon. Scale settles on the tank floor, where it insulates the burner from the water and shortens the life of electric elements. Those figures describe Water Authority zones only. Rio Rancho publishes its own City water reports, and a private well needs its own test.
- Thin air. At about 5,300 feet a gas burner has less oxygen to work with. Follow the manufacturer's high-altitude instructions when a gas unit goes in, because a bad setup burns poorly and can foul the venting.
- Closed systems. A check valve or pressure regulator can trap expanding hot water in the house lines. That pressure works on the tank and the relief valve every time the burner runs.
- Tight closets and old venting. Older homes often tuck the heater into a closet or garage corner. A replacement has to fit the space, the combustion air and the existing vent, and it may not.
How We Diagnose a Failed Water Heater
We test before we sell anything, and you can watch the whole visit.
- We ask what changed, and read the model plate for the fuel, size and age.
- We shut down power or gas as the work requires.
- We test the burner or elements, the thermostat controls and the safety devices.
- We check for leaks at the fittings, the relief valve and the tank seams.
- We look at the vent, the gas connection and the drain pan where one exists.
- We show you what failed, then write up the repair and any replacement option.
What a repair visit includes
- Tests on the burner or elements, the controls and the safety devices
- A leak check at the fittings, relief valve and tank seams
- A look at the vent, the fuel connection and any drain pan
- The tank's age read from the serial number
- Written repair and replacement options, so you can compare them

Water Heater Repair or Replacement?
The tank decides most of this. A leak from the tank body cannot be patched, and the only real fix is a new heater. A failed thermostat, element, gas control or thermocouple on a sound tank is usually worth repairing.
Age matters next. The serial number on the model plate usually shows the build date, and once a tank passes about ten years we price both options so you can compare. Add the condition of the valves and the vent to that picture, because an old unit often needs more than the one part.
Replacement choices we talk through:
- Tank, same fuel and size. The simplest swap, and often the fastest way back to hot water.
- A different tank size. Household size and peak use set this, and bigger is not always better.
- Tankless. It saves floor space and heats on demand. Hard water makes descaling a regular chore, and the gas line, vent and water flow all have to suit the unit, so we check them before quoting.
- Electric or heat pump. These depend on your panel and on the room around the unit.
What Installation Involves
A replacement is more than a swap. Expect us to drain and remove the old unit, set the new one, connect water and fuel, and test the relief valve and the vent. The job may also call for an expansion tank on a closed system, a drain pan or updated connectors, and we list those on the estimate instead of adding them afterward.
New Mexico plumbing work follows the state plumbing code, which adopted the 2021 Uniform Plumbing Code, and a 2026 draft would move it to the 2024 edition. Replacement work generally needs a permit and inspection. Ask us which office handles your address, because that can depend on where you live.
Can You Replace a Water Heater Yourself in Albuquerque?
Plan on a licensed contractor. The City of Albuquerque's permit page lists water heater installation as work that can only be completed by one, and the CID FAQ says a New Mexico licensed contractor must pull the permit before a replacement is performed and inspected. Your written estimate should say who pulls that permit, and ours does.
Renters should start with the landlord. A New Mexico courts pamphlet, revised July 2023, lists a reasonable amount of hot water among a landlord's duties, except where the heater sits in the tenant's exclusive control. Put the request in writing and read your lease for who approves the visit.
After the install we run hot water, check every joint and set the temperature. The U.S. Department of Energy suggests 120°F for most homes, which also lowers the risk of scalds.

What Changes the Price of a Water Heater Job?
We do not post flat prices, because the failure and the setup drive the cost. These lines move the number most:
- Repair part, and whether it is stocked or ordered
- Fuel type, tank size or a move to tankless
- Access, such as a tight closet or an attic location
- Vent, gas line or water line changes the new unit needs
- Permit and code items such as an expansion tank
- Night and weekend timing

Why People Call Red Wrench When the Hot Water Stops
- Owner-led work. Dominic Montoya leads the company and brings over 20 years of experience in plumbing, heating and cooling.
- A number you can check. Search NM CID License #413436 in the state license lookup. The state lists plumbing as MM-1 and natural gas fitting as MM-2, and MM-1 does not cover gas appliances or gas piping, so read the classification line for any contractor who quotes a gas water heater.
- Options in writing. You see repair and replacement side by side, with no pressure.
- Real reviews. 24 Google reviews, including customers who called us about a water heater.
“Our water heater went out on a weekend and our family was left without any water. Red Wrench was able to be here fast! They were professional, incredibly knowledgeable, and took care of the issues. Unbeatable service. Highly recommended!!”
“These guys replaced a water heater at my house. Did a great job , fast and professional . I recommend them to all my friends and family .”
Keep the Next Tank Running Longer
Flush some sediment from the tank each year, keep the area around a gas unit clear and glance at the base for moisture every month. We cover Albuquerque and nearby communities, including the North Valley, Rio Rancho and Corrales. Farther out, call first to confirm availability.
Areas we serve
- North ValleyOlder farmhouses and newer subdivisions sit close together, so check the vent before quoting.
- Rio RanchoCity well water differs from Water Authority supply, so check the City's water report.
- CorralesPrivate well water varies by property, so test hardness before choosing a tankless unit.
- South ValleyA lot with two dwellings may share a gas line, so check its size.
- Los Ranchos de AlbuquerqueA distant guest house may warrant its own heater instead of a long hot run.
- BernalilloThe Town lists CID for trade permits, so confirm the route before replacing.
- TijerasAt 6,382 feet, follow the manufacturer's high-altitude instructions for any gas water heater.
- PlacitasCensus counts split home heating among gas, propane and electric, so confirm the heater's fuel.
- Cedar CrestCensus counts show few homes heated by utility gas, so confirm the fuel first.
- Bosque FarmsWith 55% of homes built before 1980, check old vents and closets before replacing.

Water Heaters questions
Why did my water heater stop making hot water all at once?
Sudden loss usually means a heat source failed. On a gas unit that points to the pilot, gas control or a safety shutoff. On an electric unit it points to the breaker, a high-limit switch or an element. Check that the gas valve is open or try the breaker once, then call us with the model plate details.
Is a leaking water heater an emergency?
It can be. Water from the tank body means the tank has failed and can get worse, so shut the cold valve above the heater, and turn off the gas valve or the breaker. A drip from a fitting may be a simple repair. Put a pan under it, take a photo and call us.
How long does a water heater last in Albuquerque?
There is no single answer, because water chemistry and upkeep vary by neighborhood. Many tanks start to give trouble after about ten years, and hard water can bring that sooner where nobody flushes them. Read the serial number on the plate for the build date, then weigh age against the size of the repair.
Should I switch to a tankless water heater?
Sometimes. Tankless units save space and avoid standby heat loss, but they need the right gas line, venting and water flow. In our hard water they also need regular descaling. If your current setup would need major changes, a new tank may cost far less. We price both so you can compare them.
Do I need an expansion tank?
You may. If a check valve or pressure regulator makes your plumbing a closed system, hot water has nowhere to expand, and that stress lands on the tank and relief valve. A dripping relief valve can be a sign. We check your system during the visit, and any tank we recommend appears on the written estimate.
Do you work on water heaters someone else installed?
Yes. Who put it in does not change how we test it. Send a photo of the model plate if you can, and tell us the fuel type, where the unit sits and how old it is. That helps us think about parts and access before we arrive at your home.
