Leak and Pipe Repair in Albuquerque, NM

Wet drywall, a dripping fixture or a split pipe? We find the source first, then write down what the repair costs.

Leak repair in Albuquerque comes down to finding where the water actually starts, which is often not where it shows up. Red Wrench Company traces the source, fixes the pipe or fixture and tells you what the damage looks like. Call (209) 563-1400 and we will write down the price before the wall gets opened.

What Is the Leak Telling You?

Water moves along pipes and framing before it shows, so read the signs together.

Why Pipes Fail in Albuquerque Homes

The climate and the age of a house both play a part here.

  • Freezing nights. Albuquerque averages about 113 freezing nights a year (BestPlaces), and the East Mountains run colder. Exposed lines, hose bibs and pipes in unheated spaces can split, and the leak often shows only after the thaw.
  • Swamp cooler lines. Many homes run a thin water line up to a roof cooler. A line left charged in winter can freeze and split, so drain it during fall shutdown. Our swamp cooler repair page covers the cooler itself.
  • Hard water. Scale wears down valves, seats and faucet cartridges, so fixtures start dripping sooner.
  • Older materials. Homes built decades ago can still carry galvanized steel or early fittings that corrode from the inside.
  • High pressure. A failed pressure regulator stresses fittings and supply lines across the whole house.

How We Find the Source of a Leak

Finding the source first keeps your repair small and keeps holes in the drywall to a minimum.

  1. We ask when it started, and whether it gets worse with hot water, a flush or a shower.
  2. We read the water meter with fixtures off to confirm active water loss.
  3. We check fixtures, valves, supply lines and the water heater.
  4. We test the pressure where it makes sense.
  5. We open only what we need to, and explain why before we cut.
  6. We show you the source, then price the repair in writing.

Homes on a private well have no meter to read, so step two becomes watching whether the pump cycles with every fixture off. That comes up in Corrales, where the Village has no municipal water system.

What a leak call includes

  • A meter or pump check to confirm water is actually being lost
  • Fixture, valve, supply line and water heater checks
  • Any cut explained before we make it, and kept as small as the test allows
  • The repair, once you approve the written price
  • A pressure test on the repaired line and a note on any wet framing

With every fixture off, a moving meter dial points to water loss somewhere in the home.

Patch, Section Repair or Repipe?

The right fix depends on the pipe, how it failed and how many other places might fail next.

  • Fixture parts. Cartridges, flappers, fill valves and supply lines are usually quick and low cost.
  • A single split or pinhole. Replacing the section fixes it, provided the rest of the pipe is sound.
  • Repeat pinholes. More than one failure in the same run suggests the material itself is wearing out, so we price a longer section too.
  • Old galvanized lines. Patching one spot may just move the leak, and low water pressure can be part of the same story.
  • Slab leaks. These take more thought. Depending on the home, the choices may include opening the slab or rerouting the line, and we write up each one we consider workable.

We work toward same-day service for active leaks, though the job and the parts decide what can finish on that visit.

After the Leak Is Fixed

The repair is only part of it. We pressure the line back up, check our joints and run the fixtures. Then we tell you what we saw on the framing or insulation, because wet materials need to dry out. Drying, mold work and drywall are separate trades, and we will say so plainly.

Keep your photos and our written note if you plan to make an insurance claim. Ask your insurer before major repairs, because policies treat sudden pipe breaks and slow leaks differently. Plumbing work in New Mexico follows the state plumbing code, and larger repipes may need a permit, so we check that before we start.

Pipe Rules and the Water Bill

The code in force is the 2021 New Mexico Plumbing Code (14.8.2 NMAC), which adopts the 2021 Uniform Plumbing Code. The City of Albuquerque lists installation or alteration of bathroom or kitchen piping among its plumbing permit items. Its permit page says a homeowner may get a plumbing permit by passing a written exam, and a home leased or rented to others needs a licensed contractor to obtain one. Outside City limits, the office depends on the address, so check before pipe work begins.

If a leak drove up your bill, call Water Authority Customer Service at (505) 842-9287 and ask whether the account can be reviewed. We could not confirm a set adjustment policy, so keep the repair invoice and your meter readings. Rio Rancho customers ask the City, which supplies water there.

What Decides the Price of a Leak Repair?

Hidden leaks are hard to quote blind, so we give you a real number after we find the source. These factors move it most:

  • Fixture part or pipe repair
  • Time spent tracing a hidden leak
  • Pipe material and how far it runs
  • Access through walls, ceilings, crawlspaces or slabs
  • Whether a pressure regulator or valve also needs replacing
  • Night and weekend timing

A section repair replaces the failed run and leaves the sound pipe in place.

Why Homeowners Trust Red Wrench With a Hidden Leak

  • We find it first. You see the source before you pay to repair it.
  • Plain advice. A worn cartridge gets called a worn cartridge, and we will not push a repipe you do not need.
  • An owner in the trade. Dominic Montoya runs the company, with over 20 years spent in plumbing, heating and cooling.
  • A number you can look up. Enter NM CID License #413436 into the state license lookup yourself. MM-1 is New Mexico's plumbing classification, so look for that line on any contractor you call.

Stop the Next Leak Before It Starts

Disconnect hoses before the first hard freeze, drain the swamp cooler line in fall and learn where your main shutoff sits. A cheap water pressure gauge on a hose bib tells you plenty. We cover Albuquerque and nearby communities, including Rio Rancho, the North Valley and Tijeras, where the colder nights call for extra care with exposed lines.

Leak and Pipe Repair questions

How can I tell if I have a hidden water leak?

Turn off every fixture, then read the water meter and read it again after an hour. If the numbers moved, water is going somewhere. A high bill, a warm floor, damp drywall or a musty smell all support that. Check toilets first, because a running toilet is the most common quiet water loss.

What should I do first when a pipe bursts?

Close the main shutoff, then turn off the water heater so it does not run dry. Open a low faucet to drain the lines, and keep clear of wet outlets and panels. If the main valve will not close, the Water Authority can take an emergency turn-off request around the clock.

Do you repair faucets and toilets?

Yes, and many leaks turn out to be there. A worn flapper, fill valve or cartridge can waste water for months without showing up on a wall. We tell you whether a part will do the job or the fixture is old enough that replacing it makes more sense.

Why does my pipe leak again in a new spot?

Usually the pipe itself is wearing out. Corrosion from the inside, high pressure or hard water can thin a whole run, so one patch only exposes the next weak point. We check the pressure and look at the pipe we removed, then price a longer section if the pattern calls for it.

Can you thaw a frozen pipe?

Often, yes, and a slow thaw matters because the split may sit just past the ice. Open the faucet, keep heat gentle and never use an open flame. If you see water or lose flow completely, shut off the main and call. We will check the line once pressure returns.

Will you have to cut my walls open?

Sometimes, but we keep it small. We test first so any opening goes in the right place, and we tell you before we cut. Patching drywall is a separate trade, so we will say up front that the repair leaves an opening for someone else to finish.
