This is Las Vegas, New Mexico, and heating and cooling Las Vegas homes is a two-hour trip for us, about 1 hour 55 minutes up I-25 from our Paradise Blvd base. It falls outside the communities on our Google profile, so it only works as planned work. Call first and we will confirm availability. The special challenge is the building stock, with more than 900 buildings on the National Register.
Heating and Cooling Las Vegas Homes in Nine Districts on the Gallinas
Find out where your building stands before you buy anything visible. Las Vegas has nine National Register historic districts according to the local Citizens' Committee for Historic Preservation, and the American Planning Association gives the 900-plus figure. The railroad's arrival in 1879 set off a building boom, and New Town grew up on a grid east of the Gallinas River while Old Town held the west side.
National Register listing and city review are separate things. The city's Cultural Historic Districts Ordinance uses a Design Review Board and a Certificate of Approval. Its definition of an alteration covers any change to exterior architectural features. City staff may approve items the board lists as routine, and ordinary repairs that leave the exterior unchanged skip the certificate but still need a building permit. Ask the city which path a new condenser or wall penetration takes on your property.

Cold Gallinas Valley Nights Versus the Airport Reading
Use the in-town number. NOAA's normals for the city's wastewater plant station, near 6,350 feet, show about 203 freezing nights, nearly 10 nights below zero and about 6,090 heating degree days. The airport, on higher ground, averages only about 155 freezing nights. Cold air likely pools low, so plan an in-town house around the harsher figure.
Tall ceilings and unsealed attics, where a house has them, make that cold harder to handle. Cooling is a smaller load, with about 21 days at 90°F or above, so comfort upgrades usually start with heat and air sealing. Old houses also hold surprises, and we do not guess what is behind a wall.
Railroad-Era Rooms and the Jobs That Fit Them
Pick work that respects the structure:
- Ductless mini splits add cooling or shoulder-season heat with one small penetration on a rear wall
- Furnace replacement makes sense where a forced-air system already exists
- Duct repair helps rooms at the far end of an old trunk line
- Heat pump installation suits a house with sound ducts, once we confirm the cold-weather numbers
Boiler and steam systems are not on our published service list, so ask us before scheduling that work.

Getting Us Up I-25 to San Miguel County
Book early and bundle what you can, since planned work is what suits a drive of nearly two hours. PNM lists Las Vegas among the communities it serves, and we could not confirm your gas provider, so check your own bill. We assess first, then hand you a written price. Call (209) 563-1270 to talk through timing. This distance rules out urgent response, so keep a closer contact for a winter failure.
Services most needed in Las Vegas

Ductless Mini Splits
One small penetration on a rear wall can add cooling to a railroad-era house, but a new outdoor unit may count as an alteration under the city's ordinance. Ask city planning before we schedule.

Furnace Replacement
Forced-air houses here face about 6,090 heating degree days and 203 freezing nights at the in-town station. Near 6,350 feet, we follow high-altitude instructions on a trip booked well ahead.

Heat Pump Installation
Nearly 10 nights below zero at the in-town station rule out a casual choice. A heat pump fits a Las Vegas house only with sound ducts and a model whose cold-weather capacity holds up.

Duct Repair and Replacement
Rooms at the far end of an old trunk line tend to run cold first in a railroad-era house. With 203 freezing nights in town, find the leak before pricing a bigger furnace.

Furnace Maintenance
The airport's 155 freezing nights understate in-town cold, where the normals reach 203. A fall check on one planned trip up I-25 can catch wear ahead of nights below zero.

AC Installation
Cooling demand is low here, at about 264 cooling degree days in town and about 21 days at 90°F. Added cooling stays small, and exterior placement matters more than capacity.

Thermostat Installation
At about 6,090 heating degree days and 22 inches of snow in town, a good schedule earns its place. An interior thermostat also leaves a historic Las Vegas exterior untouched.

Las Vegas heating and cooling questions
Do I need city approval to add a mini split to a historic Las Vegas building?
Possibly. The city's ordinance defines an alteration as any change to exterior architectural features, and a new outdoor unit or wall penetration may qualify in a designated district. Staff can approve items the Design Review Board lists as routine. Call city planning before we schedule, since we cannot make that ruling.
Are you the right call for a broken heater in Las Vegas, NM?
Not for an urgent one. We are nearly two hours away and outside our core area, so a closer contractor will reach you sooner. We fit best on planned replacements, added cooling and ductwork that can wait for a scheduled trip. Phone first to learn what dates we have.
