Heating and Cooling in Taos, NM

Advance-scheduled projects only, about 2 hours 30 minutes from Paradise Blvd. Phone first and we will tell you what is possible.

We can take on heating and cooling Taos projects, as long as they are planned well ahead. The trip is about 2 hours 30 minutes from our Paradise Blvd base, through Espanola and up the river canyon, and Taos is far outside the Albuquerque-area list on our Google profile. Call first. We would rather tell you upfront if the schedule will not work. What makes Taos stand out is its winter: of the nine distant towns we track, it demands the most heat.

Heating and Cooling Taos Homes Through a Long Valley Winter

Design for the cold first. NOAA's 1991-2020 normals for the Taos station, near 6,970 feet, show about 6,350 heating degree days a year, some 59 percent above the Albuquerque Sunport. That comes with about 183 freezing nights, nearly eight nights below zero and an average January low of about 12°F. Snow averages about 28 inches.

Cooling is a short season. The station logs only about 23 days at 90°F or above, so many homes treat AC as optional and put their money into heat.

La Loma Plaza, Downtown and the Town's Historic Overlay

Look up your parcel before anyone cuts a wall. Town code Section 16.16.220 sets a historic overlay zone with two districts, La Loma Plaza and Taos Downtown, and a Historic Preservation Commission role. Section 16.16.220.12 covers administrative permits and certificates of appropriateness, and contributing properties trace to the 1981 and 1996 state building inventories. We will not guess at the standards for mechanical equipment, so ask the town what an outdoor unit needs on your property.

Adobe walls make a duct retrofit hard, which pushes many projects toward a small outdoor unit and a few well-placed indoor heads. Picture the line path first, since an old wall deserves care.

Fuel, Power and the Single Pipeline Into Town

Know your energy before you pick equipment. New Mexico Gas Company lists Taos in its service area, and the Bureau of Land Management has described the Taos Mainline as the only natural gas pipeline serving Taos, Questa and Red River. Plenty of rural parcels may sit beyond the gas main, so confirm your fuel and supply first.

Electricity comes through Kit Carson Electric Cooperative, which reported reaching 100 percent daytime solar in 2022. That makes a heat pump an interesting talking point here, though the cold numbers above still need to be checked against the unit's capacity table.

A ductless head needs only a small path through the wall, which matters in adobe.

Projects Worth a Trip Up the Canyon

Save the long drive for work that can be planned around one visit:

We test first and write the price down before starting. Then we run the system to prove it works. For a no-heat call, a contractor in Taos County will serve you far better than we can. For the rest, phone (209) 563-1270.

Taos heating and cooling questions

Do I need Historic Preservation Commission approval for HVAC in Taos?

It depends on your parcel. The town's historic overlay covers the La Loma Plaza and Taos Downtown districts, with a review process in the town code. Exterior work on a property there may need an administrative permit or a certificate of appropriateness. Ask the town before scheduling. Outside the overlay, other permit rules still apply.

Does a mini split make sense in a Taos adobe?

Often, yes. Ductless units avoid cutting duct chases through earthen walls, and they add cooling for the few hot weeks. On the coldest nights a cold-climate model needs checking against its capacity table, and many owners keep their existing heat as backup. We work out the design before ordering so one visit can finish it.
